It’s almost that time of year, and my friends and I are looking to watch some good horror movies. I was wondering if any Opponauts had any recommendations for super spooky shit. We’ve seen Marble Hornets, VHS 1 and 2, Grave Encounters, You’re Next, Terror at Blood Fart Lake (do not recommend), Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and so on. Anyone have anything they’d really recommend?

Christine was chessy and not really ‘horror’, but i liked it.
i hear that Chernobyl movie was pretty fucked up. as is the human centipede.

I’d like horror, not “wow, look at this super fucked up shit. Isn’t this edgy?”
I was thinking of Christine. That could be fun.

What about “It?”

Session 9:
The Halloween series, of course.
The Evil Dead
My mind is blanking on more, but I’m sure I could think of a few.
EDIT:
Mothers Day

Try out Suspiria if looking for a classic. Used to date a film major and she had me watch it. Weird and cheesy but artsy

“It” was okay. The first party was scary. The second part... man, it ruined the movie, to be honest.

I’ve always been a fan of The Thing.

Halloween shall be considered, The Evil Dead I enjoyed. Session 9... is that David Caruso or whoever? Fuck yes!

Cabin in the woods is a great movie with a twisted plot. It's on Netflix too if that helps in your decision making.

I’ll give it a look.

Already seen, but a good recommendation.

Seen the Japanese version of ‘The Ring’?
Fucking masterpiece.

Yes, and Josh Lucas. It’s a good, low-budget flick. Especially if you like creepy old buildings. The one in this film was unfortunately torn down/turned into condos not too long ago.

I will bring that up. I’ve heard good things about it.

I dunno. I’m not really a horror buff. And I strongly dislike all the “not really horror — just fucked up for shock value purposes” films like SAW, Human Centipiede.

Evil Dead 1, 2, and Army of Darkness.
Prepare yourself for the TV series!

Chernobyl was horror.
HC was....well. that

On the second part: same here, bud.

Seen all three. So bad and good.

It's great. And the movie doesn't rely on jump scare but there a few that are placed around very carefully to keep you on your feet.

Comedy/Horror:
Cabin in the Woods
New Nightmare
Scream
Shawn of the Dead (and the original Night of the Living Dead, though it’s not intentionally funny)
Slashers/Gore:
The Thing
The Exorcist
Saw
The Hills have Eyes
The Fly
Real Horror:
The Grudge
Alien
The Descent
The shining
Blair Witch

Deep star 6, Leviathan, Event Horizon

I prefer chillers to outright horror.
Recently watched:
The Old Dark House (1932)
House of Usher (1960)
Spider Baby
The Witchfinder General
Re-Animator

The Blood Waters of Dr. Z. Okay, that’s not a serious suggestion at all.

Evil Dead the 2013 version, I’m not really spooked by any kind of scary movie, so what gets me is gore.

Suspiria and Profondo Rosso are classics.

Check out The Thing. Even the recent prequel was ok.
Another good original was Alien. The sequel, Aliens, was more of an action movie than a horror/thriller. Skip all the ones after that.

I second this recommendation. It’s also just the right amount of funny without being a spoof.

Trick ‘R Treat is great, and the most Halloweenee movie there is. Pretty scary, too. Other recommendations would be It Follows, Halloween (original), The Conjuring, and Dawn of the Dead (original).

The Babadook is good, but fair warning abou the...nevermind, I’ll let you watch it. I’ve heard good things about Sinister. Also see if you can find Ju-on (The Grudge), the Japanese original. The Audition is a bit messed up and a good one too. The original Black Christmas is worth a watch. New Nightmare is iconic. Also a more recent one that I like is Dead Silence. The Town That Feared Sundown is worth a watch. The Strangers is one I like a lot. Vacancy is decent but not necessarily a must see. The Scream tetralogy is surprisingly fun and entertaining.
Need more? I can give you more.
Do not watch Paranormal Activity, sssooooo bbbooorrrriiiinnngggg.

I’ll always be a fan of 28 Days Later.
Others I didn’t see mentioned:
Hellraiser
Re-Animator
Event Horizon
The Frighteners
Cube
The Fly
Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead is surprisingly good
Cloverfield
Slither
Pitch Black

I’m making my way through everyman hybrid. I don’t think it is as terrifying as marble hornets. Marble Hornets was a practice in minimalism, hybrid has a lot more talking. Hornets however always made you feel alone and filled with dread. That said, I think Hybrid has more story than Hornets.
What I’m trying to say is, check out everyman hybrid, it’s not as good as Hornets but it’s still good.

All other horror movies bow before The Shining and Silence of the Lambs

Paranormal Activity was a boatload of sweaty donkey balls.

There are a couple decent lists on Kotaku under the ‘SHOCKTOBER’ tag. I watch a bunch each year. Let me get this out of the way first: The VHS movies are garbage.
My Fright Fest 2015 selections thus far have included:
The Taking of Deborah Logan;
a surprising delight
The Others; a classic I’ve seen a couple times now. This was to appease the gf with something I knew she’d like.
Under the Skin; I fell asleep halfway through, but if you like your horror slow-build, you might enjoy it. But I’ll give ScoJo credit: she does a damn good Ryan-Gossling-in- Drive impression.
Hellraiser ; typical 80s. A decent flick. The effects really don’t stand the test of time though.
Black Death ; not really scary, but a pretty good medieval flick nonetheless
Some recommendations:
Haute Tension; French with English subtitles. A brilliant horror movie.
Martyrs ; Christ, this one is NOT for the faint of heart. My skin still crawls when I think about it.
Trick r Treat ; Just a great damn movie
[rec] ; I actually saw the American version, Quarantine , first, and loved it. In the style of found-footage, so if that’s not your thing...
There are also a couple Asian films you could also look into; Three... Extremes, A Tale of Two Sisters, I Saw the Devil ( I actually haven’t seen, but have heard it’s great), Audition , as someone already mentioned Ringu ( The Ring ), I could go on and on...
I’m planning to watch
Creep
and
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
the next few nights. Still up in the air what I’m watching on Halloween night.

I gave it a shot, then promptly deleted it along with PA2.
